There are some excellent online radio shows and podcasts out there right now with interesting content for bluegrass (& beyond) enthusiasts. Talented Nashville multi-instrumentalist Justin Moses has performed with numerous high profile artists including Alison Krauss, Del McCoury, Emmylou Harris, Brad Paisley, Ricky Skaggs and Sierra Hull (who he also happens to be married to). An accomplished musician on banjo, fiddle, dobro, mandolin, guitar, and bass, Justin began playing music at the age of six. An in-demand session man and sideman, he also hosts this occasional podcast which provides an insider’s guide to the Nashville scene and includes interesting episodes in conversation with Barry Bales, Greg Cahill, Sierra Hull, Adam Steffey and Ron Block.
Jason is well known on the UK roots music scene as a talented guitarist and percussionist, and has recorded and toured with influential UK bands including Daily Planet and Rabbi John. He released his acclaimed solo album Still Rollin’ in 2014, with guest appearances from a slew of top USA/UK musicians of his acquaintance including Matt Flinner, Rob Ickes, Tim O’Brien and Casey Driessen. A familiar figure on the festival scene and as a teacher and helper at the Sore Fingers music camp, Jason is an engaging radio host and his programme showcases his broad knowledge and eclectic taste in roots music, ranging across bluegrass, old time, Americana and Celtic folk. Award winning Canadian musician and producer Steve Dawson has been based in Nashville for several years and has extensive connections across the music industry. Steve’s music career has seen him working on stage and in the studio with a wide variety of musicians including Bob Brozman, Tim O’Brien, The McCrary Sisters, Kelly Joe Phelps, Alvin Youngblood Hart and many others. His podcast series features fascinating long form interviews with numerous acclaimed artists working in bluegrass and many other music genres, including Mike Bub, Sara Watkins, Chris Eldridge and Danny Barnes.
Northampton-based Big Stu is a mandolin player, a bluegrass enthusiast, a radio host and MC. Stu is a regular visitor to the USA, emceeing stages at festivals including Bristol Rhythm & Roots in Tennessee and Carolina in the Fall. After the sad demise of The Bluegrass Mix radio station, home for Stu’s Bluegrass from Yonder show for several years, he now brings his Hillbilly Boogie programme from Blues & Roots Radio on Saturdays at 6pm. Stu also has a wide ranging musical taste, featuring traditional bluegrass alongside more adventurous newgrass and Americana, and has championed many emerging young artists like Molly Tuttle, Zeb Snyder and Presley Barker.
