In the realm of not-quite-bluegrass-but-very-much-associated, American/Canadian roots music duo Newberry and Verch arrived in the UK this week for a short run of dates. Renowned clawhammer banjoist, guitarist and singer Joe Newberry is a favourite of many British bluegrass and old time enthusiasts and was last here in early 2017 touring with mandolin legend Mike Compton. Joe is also an award winning songwriter whose songs have been recorded by artists including the Gibson Brothers and Ricky Skaggs. He has taught both singing and clawhammer banjo at the Sore Fingers music camp in previous years, and was a guest star on the 2016 Transatlantic Sessions live tour.
The other half of the duo, acclaimed Canadian fiddler and singer April Verch is well known to UK folk and roots audiences, having toured worldwide with her own trio for the last 16 years. April is also a talented step dancer, adding another level of interest to Newberry and Verch’s entertaining live show. She started step dancing at age three and playing the fiddle at age six! The duo’s repertoire crosses the boundaries of old time, folk and bluegrass and includes poignant original songs and traditional ballads. as well as toe-tapping fiddle tunes from a variety of American and Canadian traditions. Newberry and Verch will also be recording a session for BBC Radio 3’s folk and world music show Music Planet while they are in the UK.
