Johnny sows the bluegrass seeds
Bryn Williams, a.k.a. the ebullient Johnny Plank, has launched a new banjo magazine.
Intended as a quirky British answer to the long-running Banjo Newsletter, Bluegrass Seeds Banjo Magazine is an eclectic collection of interviews, anecdotes and instructional material, with some humour thrown in for good measure. Fans of the HOP will doubtless recognise the style.
There’s an interview with Ross Nickerson in this issue and amongst a trio of banjo tabs is a transcription of Dance on the Clouds, Tony Ellis’ tribute to John Hartford.
You’ll even find banjo-related poetry in the inaugural issue, with young banjo player Josh Carr’s sonnet I Love to Pluck my G-String.
The magazine is distributed free around the Cheshire scene, and Bryn says he’ll mail you a copy if you pay the postal costs. He hopes to grow it into something special, and invites advertisers to contribute at a “very small negotiated cost.”
