Red Allen - 1991 Gig

Footage of Red Allen seems to be pretty scarce, so I was delighted to find this recently uploaded set from California - May '91. (with David Grisman, Herb Pedersen, Jim Buchanan & James Kerwin)

A great singer who never really got the recognition he deserved, mind you a lot of that was due to himself and ill health...
There is a great book called "Teardrops In My Eyes" The Music of Harley (Red) Allen by Dennis Satterlee
published in 2007 that tells the whole story...
Regards Chris...

"Teardrops In My Eyes" is indeed a great book - and considering it was limited to 500 copies & came out in 2007, it's suprising that copies are still available (the IBMA Bluegrass Museum is the only place selling it http://www.bluegrassmuseum.org/store/page6.html).

Considering he was briefly a Blue Grass Boy, deputised for Lester Flatt in '67, and played with the likes of the Osborne Bros, Frank Wakefield, Bill Emerson, Don Reno, Chubby Wise, Bill Keith, Bill & Wayne Yates, JD Crowe, Doyle Lawson, David Grisman, Richard Greene... etc etc, it's a shame he doesn't get more recognition - the two Rebel retrospective CDs & the Folkways one are magnificent!

Got my copy from County Sales back in 2007.
In the early 50's he played bass for The Stanley Bros.(my all time favorite group)but never recorded with them.
In my opinion" Bluegrass Holiday" with JD Crowe is one of his best recordings, with the Jimmy Skinner song
"Will you be satisfied that way"being the standout track, the two Rebel cd's are great, but i always thought the later Folkway material being some of his weakest..

I'd forgotten about Red's stint with the Stanley Bros! I know what you mean about the later Folkways years (especially the "Family & Friends"), but on the 28 track Folkways compilation, 18 of the cuts are from the 1964 era with Frank Wakefield including 6 outtakes and the balance are some of the better tracks from his later years...
What I'd really like to hear tho' is that mid-seventies Jap album with Red, Frank Wakfield & Don Stover!
