The debut UK tour for Philadelphia bluegrass band Man About A Horse kicks off this week.
The extensive tour will include Maverick Festival in Suffolk, South Essex Bluegrass festival and club venues including The Musician in Leicester, London’s Green Note and Sheffield Greystones. The band will also perform at a special Independence Day event at the American Museum in Bath.
Man About A Horse blends traditional and contemporary aspects of bluegrass and Americana and has been making waves on the US bluegrass scene for the last couple of years. In 2018 the quintet won the Band contest at FreshGrass Music festival and was named 2018 Emerging Artist at Grey Fox Bluegrass festival. Man About A Horse was also nominated for the coveted Band Momentum Award by the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) in 2018, and this year they are on the ballot for New Artist of the Year.
Formed in 2014, Man About A Horse has released two studio recordings to date, their 2015 EP and their self-titled debut album in 2017. With two contrasting and talented lead vocalists in the band, they also mix strong original songwriting with a love for the classics – interesting covers of both Radiohead and Hall & Oates feature in their repertoire!
With a line-up featuring banjo (Dan Whitener), mandolin (Matthew Hiller), fiddle (Eric Lee), guitar (Matt Royles), double bass (Matt Thomas) and some sparkling vocal harmonies, this lively band has the classic bluegrass elements in place and blends dynamic performances with outstanding musicianship. Whitener also performs regularly with hip-hop/Americana fusion band Gangstagrass, who some readers may have seen on tour in the UK earlier this year. Guitarist and lead vocalist Matt Royles is particularly active in promoting bluegrass in the band’s hometown and surrounding region, with the Philly Bluegrass initiative and festival of the same name.
Man About A Horse will tour the UK from 28th June to 14th July. Full info and ticket links at the tour page here.
